Every World Cup seems to arrive with a slightly different structure, and 2027 is no exception. With 14 teams and 57 matches spread across seven weeks, the tournament uses four phases: a short Super Series, a group stage, a Super 7 round-robin and the knockouts.
This guide explains each phase in plain terms, as published in reports about the tournament structure. Formats can be refined before a tournament begins, so treat this as a working summary and check official sources for the final word. You can see every match in order on our matches page.
The four phases in one table
| Phase | Dates | Teams | Matches | Where |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Super Series | 2, 4, 6 October | 3 | 3 | Windhoek, Namibia |
| Group stage | October | 12 (two groups of six) | 30 | All three host countries |
| Super 7 | Late October to mid-November | 7 | 21 | South Africa and Zimbabwe |
| Semi-finals | 17 and 18 November | 4 | 2 | Newlands, Cape Town; SuperSport Park, Centurion |
| Final | 21 November | 2 | 1 | Wanderers, Johannesburg |
Add those up and you reach 57 matches.
Phase one: the Super Series
The tournament opens not with a headline clash but with a mini-competition in Namibia’s capital. Three teams that come through the global qualifier in early 2027 will play each other once at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek on 2, 4 and 6 October.
Why it exists
Fourteen teams do not split neatly into two groups of six, so the Super Series acts as a final filter. The winner joins the group stage; the other two go home.
What it means for fans
These three matches are likely to be among the more affordable and accessible fixtures of the tournament, and they offer a genuine knockout-style tension: one defeat can end a team’s campaign. If one of the sides involved is Namibia, the atmosphere in Windhoek could be special.
Phase two: the group stage
Twelve teams are split into two groups of six. Each team plays the other five in its group once, producing 15 matches per group and 30 in total.
The groups, as published
Group A: Afghanistan, Australia, India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Qualifier A
Group B: Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Qualifier B
Of the four teams that come through the global qualifier, one goes directly into a group, and the Super Series winner fills the other qualifier slot.
Headline fixtures
- India v Australia on 7 October at Newlands opens the main event.
- South Africa v New Zealand follows on 9 October at Newlands under lights.
- India v Pakistan on 10 October at the Wanderers is the group-stage match most fans will be chasing tickets for. See our India v Pakistan guide.
Group A in particular looks crowded. With Australia, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan all in the same section, at least one strong team is guaranteed to finish fourth or lower.
Phase three: the Super 7
This is the most distinctive part of the 2027 format.
Who qualifies
- The top three teams from Group A
- The top three teams from Group B
- The best fourth-placed team across both groups
That makes seven teams, who then play each other once in a single round-robin, giving 21 matches.
How “best fourth-placed” might be decided
Comparing fourth-placed sides from two different groups means looking at their group records side by side. In most ICC events, ties of this kind are broken by points, then net run rate, with further tie-breakers set out in the official playing conditions. We would expect something similar, but the exact criteria will be in the tournament regulations, so check those before drawing conclusions mid-tournament.
Do group results carry forward?
Some past formats have carried points from earlier rounds into later ones. At the time of writing, published reports describe the Super 7 as a fresh single round-robin. If that changes, it would make every group match more significant, so watch the updates page for confirmation.
Why it matters
The Super 7 is effectively a second league. A team that scrapes through as the best fourth-placed side still has six matches to climb into the top four. It also means a long tail of high-quality fixtures in late October and November across grounds such as Kingsmead, St George’s Park, Mangaung Oval and the new stadium at Victoria Falls.
Phase four: the knockouts
The top four teams in the Super 7 table progress to the semi-finals.
| Match | Date | Venue | Pairing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-final 1 | 17 November | Newlands, Cape Town | Super 7 1st v Super 7 4th |
| Semi-final 2 | 18 November | SuperSport Park, Centurion | Super 7 2nd v Super 7 3rd |
| Final | 21 November | Wanderers, Johannesburg | Winners of the semi-finals |
The pairing of first against fourth and second against third follows the usual World Cup convention and rewards finishing top of the table. Arrangements for weather-affected knockout matches, such as reserve days, will be set out in the official playing conditions.
What the format means for planning your trip
Buying tickets before you know who is playing
Super 7 and knockout matches are listed with placeholders such as “Group A 1st v Group B 3rd”. If you apply for these through the official ticket ballot, you are effectively betting on a venue and a date rather than a fixture. That can be a good strategy if you want to see top-level cricket in a particular city, but it is a gamble if you only want to follow one team.
Following one team
A team that tops its group could end up playing in several different cities during the Super 7. Flexible travel bookings, or refundable accommodation, will help if you plan to follow a side across the tournament.
Time zones
All three host nations are on UTC+2. Day matches start at 10:00 local time and day/night matches at 12:30 local time, which makes it easier to plan viewing and travel once the fixtures are confirmed.
Quick recap
- 3 matches in the Super Series decide one group-stage place.
- 30 group matches narrow 12 teams down to 7.
- 21 Super 7 matches decide the semi-finalists.
- 3 knockout matches crown the champion on 21 November.
