About the ground

Mangaung Oval, for many years known by sponsors’ names, is the home of international cricket in Bloemfontein, the judicial capital of South Africa. It is a compact, welcoming ground with grass banks and a relaxed, small-city feel, and it has staged Test and one-day international cricket for decades, including matches at the 2003 World Cup.

Bloemfontein sits on the high central plateau, and the ground has a reputation for true pitches that often reward batters who get themselves in.

Key CWC 2027 matches

Two of the tournament’s biggest draws pass through Bloemfontein in the group stage. Pakistan face a qualifier on 15 October, and India take on a qualifier on 17 October, both with 10:00 local starts. These give fans a chance to see star players in a more intimate setting than the larger city stadiums.

The ground then hosts three Super 7 matches, including a day/night fixture on 6 November and a 13 November game between the second and third-placed sides from Group A, which could carry high stakes late in the tournament.

Getting there

Bram Fischer International Airport (BFN) is about 15 km from the ground, a short drive. E-hailing apps operate in Bloemfontein, though availability can be thinner than in the larger cities, so allow extra time, especially after a match. Many visitors also drive from Johannesburg, which takes several hours by road.

Organisers may provide shuttles or park-and-ride options; check official transport plans closer to the time.

Where to stay

Bloemfontein is a compact city, and accommodation in the central and western suburbs, including areas around Westdene and Brandwag, is within easy reach of the ground. Guesthouses are plentiful and often good value compared with the bigger cities. With India and Pakistan playing here within days of each other, rooms may fill quickly, so book ahead.

Match-day tips

At altitude on the plateau, the sun is strong, so sun cream, a hat and water are essential. Spring days are usually warm and dry, but afternoon thunderstorms become more common as summer arrives, and evenings can turn cool, so bring a layer for the day/night match.

Check the official stadium rules for bag policy and what you can take in. Cards are widely accepted, but some cash is a sensible backup. Use registered transport after dark and keep belongings close.

Beyond the cricket

Naval Hill, in the middle of the city, offers wide views and a small nature reserve where you may spot giraffe and antelope. The National Women’s Monument and the Anglo-Boer War Museum give an insight into the region’s history. Bloemfontein also has a link to literary history as the birthplace of J.R.R. Tolkien.
