About the ground

St George’s Park is one of the oldest cricket grounds in the world to host Test cricket, with a history stretching back to the 1880s. It sits in a park close to the centre of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) and has a charming, old-fashioned character that sets it apart from the bigger modern stadiums.

The ground is best known for its brass band, which strikes up throughout the day and gives matches here a cheerful, carnival soundtrack. Add a knowledgeable Eastern Cape crowd and you have one of the most enjoyable days out on the South African circuit.

Key CWC 2027 matches

The pick of the fixtures is South Africa v England on 16 October, a day/night game starting at 12:30 local time. Expect plenty of travelling English supporters alongside a full home crowd.

A week later, on 23 October, England face New Zealand, a match-up with plenty of recent World Cup history behind it.

The ground also hosts three Super 7 matches between late October and mid-November, including one involving the Group A winners on 11 November.

Getting there

Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (PLZ) is only about 5 km from the ground, making this one of the easiest venues to reach on arrival. E-hailing apps are available in Gqeberha and are the simplest way to get around. The ground is close to the city centre, so some visitors staying nearby may be able to walk, but stick to busy, well-lit routes and avoid walking alone after dark.

Look out for any shuttle or park-and-ride arrangements and check official transport plans closer to the time.

Where to stay

The beachfront suburbs of Summerstrand and Humewood are the most popular places for visitors, with a good choice of hotels, guesthouses and seafront restaurants, and they are only a short drive from the ground. Central Gqeberha has some options closer to the stadium itself.

Match-day tips

Gqeberha is known as the Windy City, and a stiff breeze is common, which can make it feel cooler than the temperature suggests while the sun still does its work. Bring sun cream and a hat, plus a warm layer for the evening session of day/night games. Spring weather can be changeable, so a light waterproof is a good idea.

Check the official stadium rules for bag policy and prohibited items. Card payments are widely accepted, but carry a little cash as a backup. Use registered transport at night and keep valuables out of sight.

Beyond the cricket

Addo Elephant National Park, under an hour’s drive away, is one of the best places in the country to see elephants and makes a superb day trip, malaria-free too. The long beaches along Algoa Bay are great for a walk, and the Garden Route begins a short way to the west for those with time to explore.
