SuperSport Park lies in Centurion, between Johannesburg and Pretoria, and is best known for its wide grass embankments. On a sunny day the banks fill with families, picnic blankets and gazebos, giving the ground a laid-back, festival feel that contrasts with the enclosed intensity of the Wanderers up the road. It has been a regular international venue since the 1990s and hosted matches at the 2003 World Cup.
Like Johannesburg, Centurion sits high on the Highveld, which tends to help the ball travel and can make for high-scoring one-day cricket.
The ground opens its tournament on 8 October with Pakistan against Afghanistan, a 10:00 local start that could be a tight, spin-heavy contest.
On 14 October, Afghanistan take on India, which should draw a sizeable crowd from the large South Asian community across Gauteng.
The headline date is 18 November, when SuperSport Park hosts Semi-final 2 between the teams finishing second and third in the Super 7.
O.R. Tambo International (JNB) is about 45 km away by road. Traffic on the main highways between Johannesburg and Pretoria can be heavy, especially at rush hour, so build in extra time. E-hailing apps are widely used across Gauteng and are the easiest way to get to and from the ground. The Gautrain rapid rail network has a Centurion station, which may be useful depending on where you are staying, though you will still need onward transport to the ground.
Shuttle or park-and-ride arrangements may be announced for big matches, so check official transport plans closer to the time.
Centurion itself has a range of hotels and guesthouses close to the ground. Many visitors base themselves in Pretoria, which offers more choice and character, or in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs such as Sandton and Midrand, particularly if they are also attending games at the Wanderers.
Spring and early summer on the Highveld bring hot, bright days and strong sun at altitude, so pack a hat, sun cream and water. Afternoon thunderstorms are common at this time of year and can arrive quickly, so a light waterproof is worth carrying. If you plan to sit on the grass banks, bring something to sit on and arrive early for a good spot.
Check the official stadium rules for bag sizes and what can be brought in, as rules on cooler boxes and chairs can differ from match to match. Cards are widely accepted, but having some cash is a useful backup. Keep valuables secure and plan your trip home before the final over.
Pretoria’s Union Buildings and their terraced gardens are a short drive away, and the city is famous for its jacaranda trees, which are often in purple bloom around October. The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is reachable for a day trip, and the Pilanesberg area further west offers game viewing for those with a spare day.
